In the San Joaquin Valley of California the kit fox has been more successful in the urban environment than in wilderness areas. Cities like Bakersfield have become, in a sense, a reserve for this endangered species. In the urban environment there are plenty of food sources, including mice, gophers, squirrels, and the occasional hot dog. Here, the kit foxes are safe from predators like coyotes and bobcats; such predators remain on the boundaries and in undeveloped areas, although they are encroaching on the urban environment. The following video of kit foxes was shot in Bakersfield with support from the Endangered Species Recovery Program. Brian L. Cypher and his team have a number of ongoing research projects to study and protect the kit fox. They were of immeasurable help in my fieldwork.
